I wrote a persuasive essay on the topic of abortion during my lit tuition. I think I was influenced by my essay on The Important Decision.. Lol. It's 1518 words. Really long, but I'll post it here anyways. Please tell me if you are persuaded :D If anyone doesn't know, I'm against abortion. Essay Question: Abortion. Another name for murder or a desperate necessity. Currently, there are approximately 42 million abortions performed worldwide annually, which means that 115 thousand abortions are performed every day. Some think that abortion is a necessity and that there is nothing wrong with it, but I think that abortion equates to murder and that it is wrong. I am against abortion because the fetus being killed is a human, abortion harms the mothers, abortion is also a social issue and most abortions could have easily been avoided. Some people think that as a foetus is not born yet, it is not technically a human and therefore abortion is not murder. However, I disagree. The fetus in the mother’s womb obviously has feelings and sensations like any one of us. The first ultrasound of a fetus undergoing abortion was filmed and produced by Dr. Bernard Nathonson. This showed the fetus in the womb before the abortion, when it was calm and sucking its thumb. When the abortion instrument penetrated the womb, the fetus’ heart rate increased drastically and it thrashed around violently, moving away from the instrument before it even touched it. This shows clearly that the foetus can sense the danger approaching and shows feelings of fear. The ultrasound also shows the baby’s mouth wide open in a silent scream, from which the video’s name was taken. Of course, people will argue that animals, who are not considered humans or given human rights, also display signs of fear when exposed to danger. However, I feel that this is not a sustainable argument as we humans also behave the same ways as the animals and fetuses when we are approached by danger. If this argument is valid, then I can also argue that humans are not technically humans at all, because we display the same behavioral patterns as animals. Of course, this is not true, of humans as well as fetuses. Babies are born prematurely at five months old, while ‘fetuses’ are also aborted at as old as five months. Is this prematurely born baby not a human? No one would say that, yet the law says that foetuses that are not yet born are not to be considered human. Does it make sense, that for two babies who are at the same stage of development but only in different places, one can be considered human and the other not? I feel that this is completely illogical. Besides, I feel that killing the foetus before it is born is the equivalent to killing the baby after it has been born. If we kill the foetus now, we are destroying its entire future, or in other words, the ‘human’ it will become in the future. If we kill it now, won’t it be the same if we kill the human it becomes when it grows up? Just because we can make it in time to kill it before it becomes a ‘human’ doesn’t mean that it is justified to do so. Others will argue that if a foetus is considered a human, then an embryo is also considered a human. Therefore, isn’t it considered murder for us to kill sperms and eggs? I feel that this argument is not valid as it is the embryo that we consider a human not sperms and eggs. Once a sperm and egg merges, it has already become a human. But if they are still separated, they are not considered human life forms, as an egg cannot form a human by itself and neither can a sperm. Lastly, even though we say that the foetus is not human, we still unconsciously think of it as human. During the abortion process, the abortionists will tear the fetus’ body apart with the abortion instruments and suck the shattered remains through a suction tube. The head is too big to be sucked out in one piece, so the abortionists will use a forceps to crush the head until it can be sucked into the tube. The abortionists themselves refer to the head as No. 1. They would say to each other, ‘Is No. 1 out yet?’ This shows that even those who perform many abortions everyday have to use these terms to refer to the fetus to shield themselves from the inhuman nature of what they are doing. Besides killing the fetuses, the mothers of the fetuses are also harmed when they undergo the abortion process. If the abortion is performed by an unskilled abortionist, many complications can occur which might affect the woman for life. For example, the uterus might become infected or punctured, the latter causing severe internal bleeding and possibly death. The woman’s reproductive organs might also be damaged and she would no longer be able to give birth to another baby. Besides these, the woman might also suffer from depression and various other psychological disorders due to the guilt she feels from deciding to abort the baby. Abortion is also a social issue in our society today. Abortion provides an easy way out should one get pregnant accidentally or while having unprotected sex. This option of abortion being readily available makes people less careful about whom they have intercourse with, as they would be able to deal with the consequences effectively and efficiently with no repercussions. Because people are careless and have unprotected sex, the risk of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases being passed on is much higher. If abortion was made illegal, people would not be allowed to have an escape should they get pregnant. This would make them more wary and careful, as well as always choosing to have protected sex if they have it with multiple partners. This will greatly reduce the risk of AIDS being transmitted. Most abortions could have been easily avoided if the sex partners had made the effort to have unprotected sex. Some people may argue that abortion is necessary because of the rape victims getting pregnant. Of course, no one would say that the rape victims were responsible for the pregnancy themselves. However, this argument only applies to one percent of all abortions performed today! Statistics show that only 1% of all abortions occur because of rape or incest, while 6% occur because of potential health problems concerning either the mother or the child. This means that the 93% of abortions left are performed because the child is unwanted or inconvenient! The fact that the child is not convenient for the family is not a valid excuse for abortion. If having a child would not be convenient to the family, then people should be more careful to avoid becoming pregnant. If they do make a mistake and become pregnant, then I feel that they should be made to bear the consequences of their mistakes. The innocent child they have conceived should not be the one to suffer because of their carelessness. After all, doesn’t the law punish criminals for their crimes and punish them for what they have done wrong? The mothers made the decision that led to them becoming pregnant, and they should deal with it and not kill the baby to try and escape from the repercussions of their unwise decision. In the first place, they should try their best to avoid getting pregnant and should not take risks. If everyone does that, then the abortion rate would be much lower as there would be a smaller number of unwanted pregnancies. Some people may also argue that if the fetuses will be born deformed or with genetic disorders such as Down’s syndrome, the mother should be given the choice whether to abort the baby or not. I feel that this is utterly ridiculous. What is the baby to us, some defected stock that we can throw away because we can still get a new and better product in the future? Besides, the foetus is considered a human, so it should be allowed to have a chance to live. It is not necessarily true that people with deformities will suffer if they are born. Look at people such as Steven Hawkins and Beethoven. I’m sure that if you were given the two options, to live with a deformity or to die without getting a chance to live, you would choose to live with a deformity. The mothers have no right to make that choice that concerns the life or death of the child, because the life that will be taken through abortion does not belong to the mother, or the abortionists, but to the child. In conclusion, I feel that the people in our society now should do their best to avoid unwanted pregnancies, thus avoiding abortion. Our civilised society now should not resort to such barbaric and inhumane means to solving the problem of an unwanted pregnancy. As the proverb says, ‘Prevention is better than the cure.’ I agree that abortion is wrong, that it is a form of murder, and that it should be made illegal except for women who had no choice in the matter so that we would not have to perform such a cruel and inhumane thing. |
